The fleeting hopes for the Wilson Warbirds to reach the Single-A Carolina League playoffs were systematically squashed by the Hickory Crawdads with a 10-7 victory Saturday night, Aug. 29, at Wilson Ballpark.
The Warbirds loss and 11th straight win by the Fayetteville Woodpeckers — 5-4 over the Salem RidgeYaks — left Wilson nine games behind North Division leader Fayetteville with eight games remaining in the second half of the season. The Woodpeckers will square off with first-half winner Fredericksburg Nationals in the first round of the Carolina League playoffs after the final week of the regular season.
Wilson, now 64-59 overall and 28-29 in the second half, has one home game remaining Sunday afternoon at 1:05 against Hickory, which has won five straight over the Warbirds…
