A new sculpture depicting Virginia’s first African American family was unveiled Saturday at the African Landing Memorial at Fort Monroe in Hampton.
The unveiling was part of a National Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal at Fort Monroe, which included a procession of descendants to the memorial site before the ceremony started at 11 a.m.
Antony, Isabella, and their son William arrived at Point Comfort from Angola aboard the White Lion in 1619, making them Virginia’s first African American family. Saturday’s sculpture is the first of three planned installations that will make up the full African Landing Memorial…
