Convicted murderer James Michael Spann, 53, was denied parole Sept. 1 for the fourth time in the 1993 shooting death of teenaged mother Karie Ann Newberry, one of Dickson County’s grisliest murders on record.
Tennessee Board of Parole Chairman Robert Waggoner recommended Spann not be released and told the inmate to continue a pattern of good behavior to be reconsidered in two years.
Spann sat stone-faced from the conference room of Bledsoe County Correctional Complex in Pikeville, where he is serving a life sentence. He shot Newberry to death and set her body on fire.
The 45-minute hearing consisted of Waggoner asking questions of Spann and detailing specifics from the case. Spann referred to his crime as an “angry mistake.”…
