Simba and I visited and hiked through Stono River County Park near Johns Island, South Carolina, a beautiful 85.5-acre Lowcountry park where wooded trails, tidal wetlands, long elevated boardwalks, and an island in the Stono River combine to create a surprisingly varied hiking experience. Located at the foot of the John F. Limehouse Memorial Bridge, the park offers an easy way to leave the developed Charleston area behind and experience the marshes and waterways that define so much of coastal South Carolina.
With only about 1.5 miles of trails, this isn’t a particularly long or difficult hike. What makes it interesting is how quickly the surroundings change. Simba and I started among the trees on the mainland, followed the trail toward the marsh, crossed more than 1,000 feet of tidal wetlands on an elevated boardwalk, and eventually reached a marsh island with additional trails and views across the Stono River. It’s a relatively short adventure that manages to pack several distinctive Lowcountry environments into a small area.
🌿 A Newer Park in the Charleston Area
Compared with many of the parks and historic places we’ve explored around Charleston, Stono River County Park is relatively new. The park officially opened to the public in March 2020 after years of planning to preserve the property for recreation and public access. Its location along the Stono River gave Charleston County an opportunity to protect a sizable area of tidal marsh while creating a place where visitors could experience the riverfront landscape on foot.
The park encompasses approximately 85.5 acres, but only a portion of that is conventional dry land. About 25.3 acres consist of highland, another 12.2 acres form the park’s marsh island, and approximately 48 acres are tidal marsh adjoining the Stono River. That breakdown explains why wetlands play such an important role in the experience. This isn’t simply a wooded park that happens to sit near a marsh — the tidal environment is one of the park’s defining features.
🌉 At the Foot of the Limehouse Bridge
The park sits beside the John F. Limehouse Memorial Bridge, which carries Main Road high above the Stono River between the West Ashley area and Johns Island.
