State gives $1.8 million to support new housing in Akron’s Middlebury

A state program called Welcome Home Ohio is providing a $1.8 million boost for local efforts to improve housing options in Akron’s Middlebury neighborhood.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik have announced grants for the purchase, rehabilitation and construction of homes in the Akron-Canton area.

A news release announcing the latest round of funding from the state’s Welcome Home Ohio Program, passed by the Ohio General Assembly and signed into law by DeWine in 2025, highlights “$26.9 million in grants to expand access to safe, affordable housing in 57 counties.”

State officials will provide $900,000 to The Well Community Development Corporation to construct nine single-family homes.
