Akron schools reinstates more than a dozen employees who faced layoffs

Akron Public Schools is reinstating 15 employees the school board had voted to lay off earlier this year due to budget challenges.

The employees were part of a larger group of 17 set to lose their jobs by July 1 as part of $11 million in cuts the district had planned in order to avert a deficit. That included six intervention specialists who work with students with disabilities, four learning resource center technicians who work in district libraries, an art therapist and six deans of students who act as assistant principals.

Most of those employees were reappointed during a board of education meeting Monday. They will return to positions that the district said are currently vacant, preserving the savings associated with their former jobs being cut…
