Snake Mountain, once eyed for intense mining, now protected

EAST NASSAU — More than 150 acres of rugged backwoods once threatened by mining will open to the public for the first time.

Snake Mountain, which features steep ridges and panoramic outcroppings, is now a conservation area following a deal between the Hudson Taconic Lands and longtime land owner Lane Construction Corporation. It could be open for public access as soon as next spring.
