Former driver shows off race car to BOCES auto students

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Students in the Automotive Trades Technology program at Capital Region BOCES recently got a rare glimpse into a race car. Retired driver Scott Hamel showed off his 1963 Corvette Pro Mod race car to the students.

Hamel is a teaching assistant at BOCES. He brought in the car for a lesson as well as a reward for a year of hard work.

Hamel uses a wheelchair as a result of an accident when he was a teenager. He also raced for over 40 years with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, retiring eight years ago.

Students learned about the modifications the car needed for Hamel to race. He also highlighted how the body of the car is made of carbon fiber and weighs 73 pounds, making the car faster…
