ROTTERDAM — Schalmont has a problem that nearby school districts would love: Too many students.
District leaders want to add 12 classrooms to Jefferson Elementary School to accommodate the steady increase in students. While nearby districts are cutting staff or closing schools due to a precipitous decline in the student population, enrollment at Schalmont is booming and has remained high for years, Superintendent Tom Reardon said.
He does not want to increase class sizes — elementary classes are capped at 23 students currently — but he is running out of space and hopes voters will back plans to add classrooms…
