Rensselaer Take Back the Night event raises awareness for domestic violence victims

RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) — It’s National Crime Victims Awareness week, and on Thursday night the Liza Ellen Warner Association hosted a Take Back the Night walk to raise awareness for victims of domestic violence.

This October, it will be 22 years since Liza Ellen Warner was murdered by her husband after asking for a divorce. She was a talented hairstylist, and a kind daughter, according to her mother Martha Lasher, who now works at Unity House as a case manager.

“Liza Ellen Warner, anytime I can say her name, any event that we do that has her name on it will keep her memory alive,” said Lasher. “We were extremely close, she always made sure I was taken care of.”

Through that experience, Martha became dedicated to preserving Liza’s memory and connecting to people with similar experiences. Meaghan Hart had already been working with Lasher in the association to raise awareness when things became more personal.
