Russell Sage College and ACPHS to reach merger milestone

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Russell Sage College and the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) are pursuing a merger, which will complete the first stage of transaction on June 1.

June 1 marks a crucial step in the merger process as the colleges have already received approval from the New York State Department of Education and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. In the next year, the schools will go through the U.S. Department of Education’s review process before they’re fully merged in fall 2027.

Russell Sage College President Matthew Shaftel said this merger isn’t happening due to enrollment or financial reasons, but for the student experience and legacy.

“Neither school needed to do it,” said Shaftel. “We’re doing everything we can to be as merged as possible now just because it benefits our students.”

As part of the transition, ACPHS President Toyin Tofade announced today that she will be concluding her term on June 30 as part of the merger process. On July 1, she will begin a role as president emeritus with ACPHS and continue to aid with the transition…
