Increase in e-bikes creating road safety issues

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — With the weather warming up, more people are out and about to enjoy it, that includes kids on e-bikes. Police are seeing an increase in both the number of e-bikes on the road and incidents involving these vehicles from the Capital Region to Berkshire County. One local police department has taken steps to proactively address the issue.

“We have a lot of children and seniors in this neighborhood, and these kids on these bikes don’t seem to really care,” said Andrew Claridge, who was fed up with the number of kids recklessly driving motorized bikes through his quiet Colonie cul-de-sac.

“Popping wheelies, going like 50 mph down the middle of the road,” he detailed. “And big groups of them, not just one or two, but, you know, six or seven or eight blocking traffic, yelling things at people as I go down the street.”

He called the town’s police department, which promptly addressed the issue by stopping the kids on the street and talking to parents in the area about what is appropriate behavior…
