Teens recognized for heroism during deadly Troy fire

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Several good Samaritans stepped in to help during the deadly house fire on 5th Avenue in Troy on Wednesday afternoon. Among those individuals were several kids who came across the fire and decided to step in to help.

Cam’den Hooks, Amari Bertrand and Kevin Girard were commended by the mayor on Friday for their brave acts. 13-year-old Cam’den Hooks explained what the three of them saw, making them jump into action.

“We were walking from Knickerbocker Park, and we were going to go to the store, and we usually don’t go there. We were just going to grab some snacks and go to my house. Then we [come] across this house that had a couch on its porch, and it was on fire. So me, Kevin, and his sister (Amari), we all decided to go to the porch. I knocked on the door and called 911 and we just wanted to get out there and do the right thing,” said Hooks.

Mayor Carmella Mantello gave these three children a Certificate of Recognition for their brave efforts on the day of the fire. One their mothers also spoke up about how she is proud that these kids used the safety skills they talked about…
