Alaturco Mediterranean opening in former Gershon’s building

SCHENECTADY — Alaturco, a Mediterranean restaurant that began in 2014 and has operated multiple locations in Ballston Spa, Clifton Park and Albany over the years, has purchased the former Gershon’s Deli & Caterers building in Schenectady, which has been vacant for less than three months, since the eatery abruptly closed after more than 70 years.

Nurgul Ziya, who owns the restaurant with her chef-husband, Rauf Ziya, confirmed the news to the Times Union on Saturday night. She announced the acquisition earlier in the day on Facebook. The purchase price was not immediately available; the Gershon’s building, at 1600 Union St., was listed at $599,000 when it went on the market about a week after the closure at the end of January.

The Ballston Spa location of what is officially called Alaturco Gyro Mediterranean Restaurant, at 142 Milton Ave., is staying open, according to Nurgul Ziya’s response to a question on her Facebook post.
