As a state we have cleared out overnight after yesterday’s active day filled with showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures have fallen into the 60s and 70s in the metro area and most of New Mexico. Today’s forecast has another round of showers and thunderstorms for New Mexico starting in the afternoon. These showers and storms will bring the threat for gusty winds and also localized heavy rainfall once again. The higher risk for communities to see heavy rainfall will be in southern and southwest New Mexico. The NWS will issue a Flood Watch, for the third day in a row, for the Ruidoso and Capitan region for the potential to see heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding concerns.
Monsoon moisture will still be part of this week’s forecast bringing daily shower and thunderstorm chances to New Mexico. This week drier air will start to wrap around a high-pressure system lessening rain and storm chances in eastern New Mexico. The moisture will be limited to parts of western, southern, central and northern New Mexico throughout the week. The drier air is expected to contribute to warmer temperatures in the east along with a high-pressure system that will be an influential force in our forecast later in the week.
