Albuquerque police say crackdown on street racers and speeders on Montgomery seeing results

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque police are cracking down on speeders and reckless drivers on one of Albuquerque’s most dangerous streets. They launched a summer effort to reduce street racing and share how that initiative is going.

It’s a street in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights, notorious for speeders and street racing. The stretch of Montgomery from I-25 up to Tramway is known for reckless drivers. On July 1, the Albuquerque Police Department launched an operation to crack down on speeders, many are teenagers. “As soon as school’s out or there’s a break, it just attracts the racers and the cruisers over there for years. And so since we know this is going on, we try to catch it ahead of time,” said Lt. Tommy Benavidez.

Lt Benavidez is a part of the Northeast Area Command and said the operation was prompted by complaints from residents. So far, he said it’s been a success. “We’ve conducted about 34 traffic stops. We’ve issued 23 citations, five warnings. We’ve done about five welfare checks,” said Lt. Benavidez…
