Freeze Watch issued for central Maryland and northern Virginia

BALTIMORE, MD—Forecasters issued a Freeze Watch for a large swath of the mid-Atlantic on Sunday, warning that an unseasonably late cold snap could threaten crops and gardens that have flourished during an especially warm spring.

The National Weather Service alert covers late Monday night through Tuesday morning for portions of central and northern Maryland, northern and western Virginia, and the West Virginia panhandle.

Meteorologists expect temperatures to drop as low as 26 to 30 degrees. While freezing temperatures are not unheard of in April, weather service data indicates this event is arriving about 10 days later than the median date for the final spring freeze in areas east of Interstate 81…
