Man shot outside Brookhaven Kroger in DeKalb shooting spree dies; third victim killed in random attacks

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — The third victim in last Monday’s shooting spree in DeKalb County, who initially survived the random attacks, has died according to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Tony Matthews, 48, was described as an unhoused man sleeping outside the Peachtree Road Kroger in Brookhaven when he was shot last Monday morning. He had been hospitalized in critical condition after the attack; the medical examiner’s office said he passed on Sunday.

“The loss of Mr. Tony E. Matthews is a tragedy that deeply affects his family and our entire community,” said Brookhaven PD Chief Brandon Gurley in a statement. “The Brookhaven Police Department is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into this incident. We will continue to work closely with the DeKalb County Police Department, DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, and state partners to ensure that all aspects of these serious crimes are comprehensively investigated and that justice is served.”…
