Police recover $45k from Uber package scam

DENVER (KDVR) — Police were able to recover $45,000 from a scam after an Uber driver went to pick up a rider but instead ended up with only a package in his car.

The Westminster Police Department said that last week, an Uber driver was on the way to pick up a rider when he received a message that asked him to deliver a package instead. After arriving, someone placed a package in his car and walked away.

The driver cancelled the ride and contacted the police, and Uber confirmed this was a known scam. A similar scam involving a rideshare driver occurred in California. In late April, the Paso Robles Police Department said a scammer directed a victim to package their money and send the cash through a rideshare service.

Westminster police said they found that a victim was scammed into sending $25,000 in cash through the Uber request, along with another $20,000 through FedEx. Officers were able to intercept the other shipment, ultimately recovering $45,000…
