University of Michigan grad Andre Douglas named to Artemis III crew

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — When Artemis III takes flight next year, it will include another astronaut with Michigan ties.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced the crew for the Artemis 3 mission on Tuesday. It includes astronaut Andre Douglas, who has been tapped as a mission specialist for the journey.

NASA reveals Artemis III crew

A biography from NASA says Douglas joined the agency in the 2021 Astronaut Candidate Class. The Florida native got his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, but went to the University of Michigan to earn a pair of Masters degrees, one in mechanical engineering and another in naval architecture/marine engineering.

Artemis III will be Douglas’ first space flight, but it’s a long time coming. He told the National Math & Science Initiative that he has had dreams of traveling to space ever since he was a child…
