Washtenaw County reports increase in AI-powered impersonation scams

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is reporting an increase of reports of scammers attempting to dupe residents by using AI to make their scams sound more convincing.

The sheriff’s office issued a notice Monday, Aug. 31, warning the public it has been receiving reports showing scammers disguising themselves as sheriff’s office employees are now using AI and other technology to make their scheme seem legitimate and trustworthy.

The scammers require the receiver to send money, purchase gift cards or other financial means and threaten the recipient, or someone they know, with incarceration, arrest, detention or other penalties if they fail to comply…
