Medical providers across Metro Detroit are reporting a spike in respiratory illnesses as students return to classrooms this fall. Doctors at hospitals and clinics in Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Monroe, Macomb, and Livingston counties have seen increased cases of viral upper respiratory infections, asthma flare-ups, and gastrointestinal illnesses.
Lindsi Shaw, a nurse practitioner and regional quality lead at MinuteClinic, said local providers are seeing seasonal respiratory illnesses increase as fall approaches and kids are heading back to school. Shaw works across several locations in the region.
“Viral uri is back pretty significantly as kids are returned to school,” said Dr. Robert Wahl, emergency vice chief at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, according to ClickOnDetroit. “We’ve seen a fair amount of people with cough/runny nose/sore throat.”…
