DETROIT, MI – About 50 protesters gathered outside Detroit’s federal courthouse Monday to oppose the proposed Romulus ICE detention center, urging state and local leaders to take action to block the project after a scheduled court hearing was postponed.
The demonstration, organized by the Coalition to Shut the Camps and allied advocacy groups, came as the State of Michigan and the City of Romulus continue their lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security over plans to convert a warehouse at 7525 Cogswell Street into an immigration detention center.
Protesters held signs and chanted outside the downtown courthouse, calling on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, the Great Lakes Water Authority and state environmental regulators to use any authority they may have over permits, utilities and infrastructure tied to the facility…
