Self-taught baker opens her first brick-and-mortar on South Main

After years of popping up around Fort Worth, Gretchen Seegel recently opened her very first scone bakery, Sunrise Scones.

Seegel grew up in a family of self-taught bakers. She would visit her grandmother in Maine every summer and cherishes her fresh apple pies and chewy molasses cookies. She loved trying out new bakeries, but could never find a scone to satisfy her craving — until she created her own “perfect scone recipe.” It uses heavy cream and sweet cream butter to create a treat that is crisp on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside.

Seegel started by selling her treats at the former The Table market before securing a permanent spot at the Clearfork Farmers Market. People would ask her where they could buy her scones during the week. She would drive around the city and wonder where she could make that happen…
