Four Maryland laws going into effect July 1, 2026

MARYLAND (DC News Now) — A variety of bills that Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed are going into effect starting July 1, 2026.

DC News Now took a look at four such bills that cover the sale of unauthorized drug products, electric vehicle recharging sales, free cancer screenings for volunteer firefighters and the prohibition of School Resource Officer (SRO) having sexual activity with students.

HB 1523 / SB 820: Enforcement and sale of unauthorized consumable products

HB 1523 and SB 820 address the regulation of different unauthorized consumable products such as kratom, tianeptine and phenibut.

Retailers are not allowed to distribute, sell, display or advertise these unauthorized products. Any violations will lead to a misdemeanor — if they are convicted, they will be subject to a fine of up to $5,000…
