Traffic light today, roundabout tomorrow: Routes 9 and 287 in Loudoun County set to change

An intersection in Loudoun County, Virginia, that slows the daily commute for tens of thousands of people from Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia will be transformed into a roundabout, beginning Thursday, Sept. 16.

Today, there’s a four-way traffic light at the intersection of Virginia Routes 9 and 287, outside of Hillsboro. Virginia’s Department of Transportation says the average daily volume for the intersection is 28,250, with 19,000 vehicles approaching the intersection on Route 9, and 9,250 on Route 287.

Starting Thursday, Loudoun County says the traffic light will be turned off and a new traffic pattern will require drivers to navigate the intersection as a roundabout…
