Montgomery Co. Public Schools superintendent warns of ‘significant’ layoffs amid budget concerns

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Taylor is sounding the alarm over possible layoffs as a budget battle continues. Taylor wrote a letter to MCPS staff expressing “extremely serious concerns” on Tuesday.

Montgomery County is facing a budget shortfall of roughly $150 million. To balance the budget, Taylor said the school district’s entire planned increase of $179 million is on the table for consideration.

Outgoing County Executive Marc Elrich is recommending a property and income tax increase, which he said is needed to fully fund Montgomery County Public Schools in the upcoming fiscal year. Elrich’s proposal for the 2027 fiscal year budget includes $8 billion in spending. The plan would raise property taxes 6.3% and income taxes by .1%…
