HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Nearly two years after Helene destroyed a section of Interstate 40 through the Pigeon River Gorge, crews are moving forward with a major rebuilding effort using new construction methods designed to better withstand future storms.
The project is now the largest to date for the N.C. Department of Transportation and carries an estimated multi-billion-dollar price tag.
