ATLANTA — MARTA will fully activate its new fare gates on Saturday, May 30, ending the extended customer grace period and requiring riders to pay to enter the transit system.
Beginning Saturday, customers at rail stations with the new fare gates will need to tap a bank card, mobile wallet, or new Breeze card or ticket to ride. MARTA had kept some gates and emergency exit doors open past the original May 2 deadline to give riders more time to get new Breeze cards and adjust to the updated system.
MARTA Interim General Manager and CEO Jonathan Hunt said the agency left gates and doors open because the new system was not as far along as expected when the transition period ended.
