Stolen Car Chase Turns Deadly On Covington Highway, Teen Left Clinging To Life

What started as a routine stolen-car stop on a busy DeKalb County corridor spun into a deadly scene Thursday afternoon, leaving a woman dead and a teenager fighting for life after a high-speed police chase went off the road.

How Authorities Say It Unfolded

DeKalb County police said officers were patrolling near Covington Highway and Panola Road around 3:30 p.m. after reports of a stolen vehicle in the area. When they spotted a car matching the description and tried to pull it over, the driver hit the gas instead of the brakes and took off.

While fleeing, the driver lost control, veered off the roadway and plowed into two pedestrians, according to authorities. One woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A teenage pedestrian was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The driver was transported with serious injuries, and a passenger suffered minor injuries, according to WSB Radio.

Local Context And Pursuit Scrutiny

The crash lands in the middle of growing scrutiny over when officers should keep chasing and when they should back off on DeKalb roads. In February, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on a separate police pursuit that ended when a fleeing vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian, and noted that the department reviews all pursuits to check whether they line up with department policy.
