Lessons from a Deadly Holiday: Law enforcement urges safe driving after Fourth of July travel period

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) — The fireworks have faded, but law enforcement agencies across Georgia and South Carolina say the lessons from the Fourth of July holiday travel period should stay with drivers long after the celebrations end.

While millions traveled to family gatherings, lakes and fireworks shows over the holiday weekend, state and local law enforcement spent the weekend responding to crashes, enforcing traffic laws and working to keep roads safe.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, 12 people were killed during the state’s 78-hour Independence Day holiday travel period, down slightly from 13 fatalities during last year’s holiday period. Troopers also investigated more than 295 crashes, resulting in more than 180 injuries…
