First-generation doctor returns to rural Georgia to address healthcare deserts

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Alvaro Cortez’s journey to become a doctor started in rural Dalton, where he watched his parents struggle to find care for his baby sister.

As the son of Mexican immigrants, Cortez saw his parents navigate a healthcare system that didn’t always speak their language. His younger sister, Isabella, was born with genetic diseases.
