Hometown History: The Battle of Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WJBF) – Two battles of the American Revolution were fought in Burke County, but it was also the site of a battle near the end of the Civil War.

The Battle of Waynesborough (the town’s spelling at the time of the Civil War) happened ahead of Sherman’s famous ‘March to the Sea,’ probably as a diversion.

“The Battle of Atlanta took place, took a little bit of time. And once it was over with, that set the stage for the Battle of Waynesborough,” said Bill Tinley, a Waynesboro historian.

It was classmate versus classmate. The players? Union Brigadier General Judson “Kilcalvary” Kilpatrick and Confederate Major General Joseph “Fighting Joe” Wheeler…
