Denver’s boomtown dream hits a pause
Not long ago, Denver seemed unstoppable. People from across the country moved to Colorado’s capital for its mountain views, strong job market, and active lifestyle. During and after the pandemic, demand for homes surged, construction cranes filled the skyline, and new neighborhoods expanded quickly.
Today, the mood feels very different. Empty office buildings, slower home sales, and growing concerns about downtown have replaced much of the excitement. The city that once symbolized rapid growth is now facing a new challenge as it tries to adjust to changing economic realities and shifting work habits.

Denver became one of the most popular destinations for people leaving expensive coastal cities. Lower housing costs, outdoor recreation, and flexible work arrangements made it especially attractive during the pandemic years.
As thousands of newcomers arrived, developers rushed to build apartments, homes, and commercial spaces. The construction boom helped meet demand but also changed the city’s landscape.
