Denver man stopped for speeding, arrested following K-9 drug detection

DENVER (KDVR) — What initially started as a speeding violation stop ended up as a drug bust on July 10, as a 49-year-old Denver man was arrested on several charges.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office reported that a deputy stopped a vehicle on July 10 for speeding on Highway 285 just north of Poncha Springs, with K-9 Arch and his handler sent to assist.

Upon arrival, K-9 Arch alerted to the vehicle, prompting a search that led to the recovery of 74 grams of suspected cocaine and 15 grams of suspected methamphetamine, along with several items considered to be drug paraphernalia.

Deputies arrested the driver, a 49-year-old Denver man, booking him on a $5,000 bond with the following potential charges:

  • Unlawful distribution of a controlled substance
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Speeding 10-19 miles per hour over the posted speed limit
