‘Wasn’t pocket change’: Las Vegas man sentenced for Coinstar crime spree

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – A Las Vegas man who went on a crime spree stealing from several Coinstar kiosks across Colorado, including Mesa County, was sentenced to four years in the Department of Corrections.

Richard Pena, 37, stole more than $67,500 from Coinstar over four days in November 2021.

“This case wasn’t pocket change — it was real loss for businesses and communities along the I-70 corridor,” Attorney General Phil Weiser said in a news release. “Through hard investigative work, prosecutors in the Special Prosecutions Unit were able to bring justice for this 2021 coin-cashing kiosk heist that stretched from Grand Junction to Thornton. I’m grateful for our partnership with the Thornton Police Department and Coinstar in the investigation and prosecution of this case.”…
