AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A lightning strike caused an explosive scene in an Aurora neighborhood Sunday night, sending shards of wood flying and damaging nearby homes, according to residents and video captured by a neighbor’s security footage.
The strike happened in a residential neighborhood northeast of the Cherry Creek Reservoir around 7:30 p.m., when a bolt of lightning hit a tree, triggering what neighbors described as a loud explosion. Security camera footage shows the moment the lightning illuminated the neighborhood before striking the tree and sending debris across the area.

“Just flash, boom, like on top of each other. So loud,” said neighbor Brenda Cramer.
