Family sues former APD officer and city for October 2025 officer-involved shooting

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A family has filed a lawsuit against former Austin Police Officer James McKinney and the city of Austin related to an October 2025 on duty shooting which left a then 16-year-old boy with permanent injuries after he was hit by gunfire.

The victim, identified by the initial J.M.G. in the lawsuit, survived but will need continuous medical care for the rest of his life, according to the petition obtained by KXAN. The family is seeking over $1 million in monetary relief, the lawsuit says.

According to the lawsuit, the family is suing McKinney for his “unconstitutional use of deadly force,” and against the city of Austin for its failure to train its officers on its moving-vehicle shooting policy…
