Athena abandons Wildflower Center nest after both owlets die

AUSTIN (KXAN) — For the first time in her history nesting at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, Athena the owl’s breeding attempt has failed after both owlets died.

The center, along with Cornell Labs, runs the camera that monitors Athena. It was announced on Sunday that the second owlet did not survive.

“Moments like this are never easy to witness, and we share in the community’s sadness at the outcome of this season,” Cornell Labs said in a post on their website.

The first owlet died on April 17, with the second dying just a few days later…
