‘Sorry for the inconvenience’: Historic Texas pub The Tavern delays opening

A historic bar and popular watering hole among sports enthusiasts and University of Texas at Austin students alike had to delay its opening on Thursday, May 7, due to a series of code violations related to the property, a violation notice on site and city records revealed.

The Tavern is a German-inspired neighborhood pub and sports bar on West 12th Street, bridging Old West Austin and the Clarksville neighborhood with downtown and UT. MySA captured images of signage posted to The Tavern on Thursday that indicated the bar wouldn’t be open until 5 p.m., with a city-issued code violation notice displayed alongside it.

Shannon Sedwick, co-owner of The Tavern, told MySA there’s been a series of issues related to the property below where The Tavern resides, as opposed to the business itself. She also confirmed they plan to reopen at 5 p.m. The pub typically opens daily at 11 a.m. While MySA was on site Thursday afternoon, recent construction work was visible along the front of the property near the sidewalk…
