Kern High School District staff to receive free ChatGPT services through agreement with OpenAI

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern High School District officials said it is testing out the use of artificial intelligence across the district as the Board of Trustees approved an agreement with OpenAI during its regular meeting Monday.

The agreement between KHSD and OpenAI OpCo is for the school district to get access to ChatGPT Edu. According to the agenda, ChatGPT Edu is an AI platform “designed specifically for educational institutions.”

The agreement allows up to 5,000 users throughout the school district from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. There is no cost KHSD will have to pay for the initial 5,000 users, according to the agenda.

The agenda said the platform will be used for “innovation, productivity, professional learning and responsible implementation” as the district tests AI usage on a districtwide level. This includes instructional planning, content creation, research, communication and more…
