Rafael Estrada testifies at sanity phase of murder trial

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A day after deadlocking on a murder charge against a man who stabbed his wife in the neck, jurors began hearing testimony from the defendant himself to determine whether he was sane at the time of the killing.

The jury in the case against Rafael Estrada on Wednesday returned a number of guilty verdicts — just not on the most serious charge. Estrada will likely be retried on the murder count.

But a sanity portion must be held for the charges of which Estrada was convicted, including felony spousal and child abuse. He has pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity…
