Cold front to bring severe storms, localized flooding to Baltimore area

BALTIMORE, MD—Forecasters are warning Baltimore area residents to brace for a turbulent afternoon and evening commute as a strong cold front tracking across the region threatens to bring multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms and localized flash flooding.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook early Wednesday morning covering the Interstate 95 corridor through central Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia, as well as the Chesapeake Bay and Tidal Potomac River. Weather officials say the atmospheric ingredients are in place to trigger storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours between noon and 8 p.m.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, the Baltimore metropolitan area sits along a meteorological dividing line for Wednesday’s threat. While northern and western suburbs like Towson, Westminster, and Frederick are under a marginal risk for severe weather, southern Baltimore, the urban core, and communities extending down toward Annapolis and Washington are under a slight risk, representing a higher probability of severe activity…
