Ten years for $10: Baton Rouge man pleads to shooting at man who wouldn’t give him cash

A 22-year-old man pleaded guilty Monday to shooting a man after having knocked on a Baton Rouge home’s door asking for $10, then shooting at the man who answered.

Clayton Smith, 22, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder for the front door soliciting-and-shooting, which took place in October 2024 at a residence in the 1600 block of North 35th Street.

Smith was sentenced to 10 years in state prison, but had other charges dropped as part of the plea, including: aggravated damage to property, illegal use of weapons, and a simple burglary charge from a separate arrest…
