It’s no longer hearsay. A speakeasy hidden in this Baton Rouge antique shop is opening soon.

What once was hearsay has become a reality inside Baton Rouge’s newest speakeasy.

Slated to open July 17, Hearsay Social Club gives century-old antiques a new life. It’s located at 1857 Government St., inside Circa 1857, an antique store that began in 2000 and changed ownership to Garrett Kemp in 2016 when he was 21.

“One of the things that I’ve always envisioned,” Kemp said, “is the amount of conversations and gossip that’s been shared in these chairs, hopefully the last 100 years or so they’ve been in use.”

This vision is what prompted the speakeasy’s name, coined by one of Kemp’s friends. After sending a poll to close friends on top name contenders, Hearsay Social Club was the winner…
