Businesses adjust as customers no longer pay debit card surcharges

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Carlton’s, a family-owned seafood restaurant on Hooper Road in Central, is charged roughly 2% to 4% every time a customer uses a debit card. The business used to pass those costs onto customers, but a new state law says it can no longer do that.

“The fees that the credit card companies and the processing companies charge us, it’s just outrageous,” Carlton’s Jennifer LaGrange said.
