Monitoring system downgraded for Istrouma High student in gun case

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — An Istrouma High School senior facing charges in connection with a gun firing inside a classroom appeared in court Tuesday for a bond review, where a commissioner chose to downgrade the student’s monitoring system.

Marcus Washington, 18, was arrested on five gun-related charges, including possession of a stolen firearm, after the February incident. Police officers responded to the school the morning of Feb. 25, and the building was placed on lockdown after the gun was discharged.

According to an affidavit, Washington explained to investigators that he didn’t intend to bring the gun to school and had grabbed the wrong backpack that morning. Police reported the bullet landed in the ceiling over another student’s head after it accidentally went off. No injuries were reported…
