DENHAM SPRINGS — The Tanton family has been looking for answers and navigating life’s curveballs since January. That’s when then-10-year-old Katie was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, or DIPG, a rare and aggressive terminal brain cancer that primarily affects children.
“DIPG is a terminal brain cancer that affects children usually under 11,” Breann Tanton, Katie’s mom explained. “There is no cure.”
But the family is navigating the diagnosis with a little more hope. Katie is hoping to start a new clinical trial in Ohio this week, and an unexpected connection and donation is helping to relieve some of the financial burden.
