A teenage driver slammed a car into a building at the corner of California Avenue SW and SW Manning Street in South Admiral, then ran off on foot with at least two passengers before officers arrived. The crash broke two windows and drew a second Seattle Fire Department crew to the scene while police worked to piece together what happened.
According to West Seattle Blog, the driver and passengers involved were all teenagers, and the driver fled the crash scene with at least two others in tow rather than staying to speak with responders. Police are investigating the crash in South Admiral, and witnesses at the scene described seeing people matching several descriptions, including one person in white clothing, one in dark clothing, and another described as white or Hispanic and wearing dark clothing.
A Corner With a Troubled History
This is not the first time this stretch of California Avenue SW has seen a car leave the road and its occupants leave the scene. Back in November 2023, a sedan crashed into a utility pole outside 3622 California Ave SW near SW Manning Street, in front of Manning Place Apartments, with occupants fleeing on foot before returning, according to the same outlet’s earlier reporting. In that incident, an injured passenger was taken to the hospital, and police determined the vehicle belonged to a relative of one of the occupants.
A year before that, in October 2023, the same intersection was the site of a crash serious enough to require rescue extrication, forcing a full closure of California Avenue SW between Manning and Spokane streets while Seattle Fire Department crews freed a trapped victim from a damaged vehicle. The repeated incidents at this particular corner of South Admiral, a neighborhood where SW Manning Street connects to California Avenue SW just north of the West Seattle Bridge access corridors, have made it a familiar name in local crash reports.
