Visitors to Seattle’s Ballard Locks Monday racked up some major Pacific Northwest points when they observed a rare sight: Several orcas swam through Salmon Bay, delighting onlookers.
But orcas are not common in Salmon Bay where the Ballard Locks is located. Visitors are more likely to see seals lounging around, or salmon swimming through the fish ladder.
“Wow, orcas in the locks,” said Peri Erickson-Brown, who shared the encounter on Instagram. “This is literally the sighting of a lifetime. I have never heard of them coming down here.”…
